I start by understanding the person's level of knowledge and what they need to achieve rather than focusing on the technical details. I avoid technical jargon and use simple everyday language that they can relate to. I often compare technical concepts to things they already understand. For example, if I am explaining a network issue, I might compare it to traffic on a road. If there's congestion or a blockage, information can't flow properly. I break explanations into small logical steps. check for understanding as I speak and encourage the person to ask questions. I also adapt my approach and communication style based on the situation. If the person is stressed, I focus on reassurance and clarity. If they want more detail, I gradually add it in a way that still makes sense. Where helpful, I will use visual presentations or drawings to demonstrate the solution rather than just describe it. Finally, I always confirm that the person fully understands my explanation by summarizing the issue and asking questions to clarify. That is another brilliant answer that will help you easily beat the competition. Here is the next question. Tell me about a time you solved a complex IT problem. This next challenging question often features during IT job interviews and it is designed to assess resilience, problem solving and collaboration skills. Now this is a really important tip because this is a behavioral interview question. I strongly recommend you use the STAR method. The STAR method is recognized by all IT hiring managers. STAR stands for the situation you were in, T the task that needed your attention, A the action you took to complete the task, and then finally R the result following your actions. Here is my brilliant STAR method answer to help you. Tell me about a time you solved a complex IT problem. Here we go. In a previous IT role, I was supporting a department where several users were experiencing intermittent system freezes and network dropouts which were affecting productivity and causing frequent support tickets. It was my responsibility to quickly identify the cause and create a long-term solution. To identify the root cause, I first gathered detailed information from multiple users, including when the issue occurred, what applications were running, and whether it happened at specific times of day. Through my analysis, I noticed a pattern. The issues occurred during peak usage times and only on devices connected to a specific network switch. I investigated further and discovered the switch was running outdated firmware and was intermittently failing under load. To solve the problem, I scheduled a controlled update outside business hours. I updated the switch firmware, reconfigured the affected ports, and documented the changes. I also informed users in advance to help manage expectations. To test the solution, I monitored network traffic and system logs over the following week, stress tested the connection during peak hours, and liaised closely with service users. Following testing, the issue was fully resolved, ticket volumes dropped significantly, and system stability improved. I also documented the cause and action I had taken so it could be referred to during future incidents. That is a brilliant in-depth answer that uses the STAR method.
