About this video

• Video Title: Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote - DHH
• Channel: Ruby on Rails
• Speakers: DHH (David Heinemeier Hansson)
• Duration: 01:03:07

Overview

In this opening keynote for Rails World 2026, DHH discusses the transformative impact of AI and agents on software development. He draws parallels with historical technological shifts, like the advent of photography, to illustrate how new tools necessitate adaptation and innovation. DHH shares 37signals' decision to move away from handwritten code, introduces their new operating system "Omarchy," and advocates for a philosophy of "total optimism" in embracing the future of AI-driven development.

Key takeaways

• AI Euphoria and Historical Parallels: DHH frames the current excitement around AI as "AI euphoria," comparing it to the transformative impact of technologies like photography. He uses the example of portrait painters adapting to the camera to illustrate how industries evolve with technological advancements.
• The Kodak Brownie Moment for AI: November 24, 2025, is identified as a pivotal date, marking the release of accessible AI models akin to the Kodak Brownie camera, democratizing AI creation and use.
• Shift from 10x to 1,000x Programmers: The capabilities of AI agents are argued to amplify programmer productivity dramatically, moving beyond the concept of a "10x programmer" to a "1,000x programmer."
• "Pencils Down" on Handwritten Code: 37signals has adopted a "pencils down" approach to writing code manually, embracing AI agents to generate code and focusing on higher-level tasks like architecture and integration.
• Reimagining Applications with AI: The keynote explores rebuilding existing applications like HEY with native app frameworks and rethinking backends using AI agents, highlighting the potential for increased efficiency and reduced resource consumption.
• The Future of Ruby and Rails: DHH argues that Ruby and Rails are well-positioned for the age of AI due to their "convention over configuration" philosophy, which aligns with the efficiency gains offered by AI agents.
• Performance and Architecture Shifts: The discussion touches upon the performance benefits of AI, such as significantly reduced binary sizes (e.g., half a megabyte for a presentation app), and the need to rethink software architecture to accommodate agent-based workflows.
• "Omarchy" and One-Shot Apps: The introduction of "Omarchy," a new operating system built with AI, and the concept of "one-shot apps" (e.g., a calculator, writing app, video editor) demonstrate practical applications of AI in creating specialized tools.
• Embracing Total Optimism: Despite concerns about AI's risks, DHH advocates for a stance of "total optimism," viewing the current technological shift as an opportunity for unprecedented innovation and progress, rather than a cause for fear.
