Meghalaya, meaning "abode of clouds," is truly a spectacle during the monsoon. We explored remote villages like Nongstong, a village literally above the clouds, offering breathtaking views. The journey through Meghalaya in the monsoon is a serene experience; the greenery intensifies, clouds accompany you, and a slow pace offers immense peace.
We visited Nongshong village, perched atop a mountain, where clouds frequently pass through, creating a foggy atmosphere. Here, we learned about Meghalaya's unique matrilineal society, where women lead households and use their mother's surname. The houses in these remote villages are simple, often using wood, with basic facilities.
The region is famous for its waterfalls like Seven Sisters Waterfall and Paden Falls, which are at their full glory during the monsoon. Cherrapunji, known as the wettest place on Earth, receives massive rainfall annually.
A remarkable highlight is the Living Root Bridges, natural bridges formed over 10-15 years from the roots of the Ficus Elastica tree, showcasing incredible human-nature synergy.
We also visited Mawlynnong, recognized as Asia's Cleanest Village. This village is a testament to community effort, with pristine streets, bamboo dustbins, and a strong eco-tourism focus. The dedication to cleanliness is instilled from childhood.
Overall, Meghalaya in the monsoon is a deeply beautiful and tranquil experience, offering a unique blend of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and a harmonious way of life. #Meghalaya #Monsoon #IncredibleIndia #Travel #LivingRootBridge #CleanestVillage #Asia
